Summer School in the Philippines by CÉRIUM in partnership with the Roméo Dallaire CLÉ (finished)
Participation Grants
This summer school provides an opportunity to explore and understand three key socio-political challenges that define the region: governance structures, citizen group participation in political life, and the recognition of minority rights. The eleven countries that make up this Indo-Pacific region are relatively young nation-states, with most gaining independence only after World War II. Despite impressive economic growth over the past 40 years, these states face various tensions and contradictions, including:
a) significant social inequalities (within and between states) despite economic growth;
b) complex and diverse political regimes that oscillate between democracy, electoralism, coups, and authoritarianism;
c) citizen participation that is often suppressed and frequently expressed through street protests; and
d) delicate multicultural coexistence, with recurring tensions between ethnic majorities and minorities.
The summer school will take place in Diliman from June 19 to 27, 2025.
